Brighton Restoration by mckimm
Australian architecture studio mckimm has reimagined a waterside residence in Brighton, transforming it into a serene retreat that harmoniously blends period features with contemporary design sensibilities.
Located near the shoreline, the Brighton Restoration project serves as a humble yet sophisticated sanctuary for a young entrepreneur seeking respite from Melbourne's urban pace. The brief called for a light-filled haven where the homeowner could find both creative inspiration for her business ventures and peaceful coexistence with her canine companions.
Drawing influence from the client's affinity for coastal living, cosy interiors, and Byron Bay's relaxed aesthetic, mckimm has crafted spaces that evoke tranquility through materiality and thoughtful spatial planning.
The residence celebrates a tactile material palette dominated by warm, natural finishes. In the front heritage section, the studio has preserved original architectural elements, including a meticulously restored fireplace mantle that anchors the space.
Dynamic chevron flooring creates visual rhythm throughout, while a curated selection of playful furniture is complemented by travertine, limestone, and silver accents. Strategic skylights punctuate the hallway, allowing natural illumination to cascade across polished render walls, establishing an ethereal atmosphere that permeates the interior.
At the heart of the residence, a generous open-plan kitchen establishes connection with a contemporary extension, which opens onto a secluded courtyard. This graduated sequence of spaces facilitates both convivial gathering and moments of solitude. Pragmatic elements, such as a concealed pantry, have been integrated discreetly to maintain the home's serene character while addressing functional requirements.
Custom elements received meticulous attention throughout the project. In the kitchen, a distinctive range hood featuring an innovative sprayed metal finish serves as a focal point. Bespoke cabinetry handles reinforce the home's refined character, while the splash back shelf incorporates subtle bullnose detailing that adds textural depth.
The master ensuite showcases technical prowess through a challenging custom concrete basin installation that contributes both pragmatic utility and sculptural presence. This feature exemplifies the studio's commitment to crafting spaces that feel simultaneously luxurious and understated.
