Set within an 800 sqm site in Brighton, mckimm transforms a former service station into moda, a sophisticated residential development.
The project transforms an underutilized space into a harmonious blend of functionality and elegance, seamlessly integrating with its urban surroundings. Once housing mckimm's office, the site now embodies a thoughtful approach to spatial reuse and contemporary living.
The development comprises basement parking, a boutique supermarket, four meticulously crafted first-floor apartments, and the crowning jewel—a penthouse that gracefully extends across the second and third levels.
At the heart of this project lies the penthouse, designed as a tranquil sanctuary amidst urban surroundings. Tigmi Trading's curated furnishings enhance the space's sophisticated character, while strategically positioned lighting accentuates a serene neutral palette. The material narrative revolves around natural elements—travertine and polished plaster provide a rich textural foundation that grounds the airy composition.
"We sought to create an environment that balances organic tranquility with refined contemporary design principles," explains mckimm. "Each element serves both aesthetic and functional purposes, contributing to a cohesive spatial experience."
The interior progression reveals a thoughtful dialogue between materials and form. As visitors move through the space, they encounter gently curved elements juxtaposed with lightly textured surfaces. Handcrafted Venetian plaster features prominently throughout, its subtle variations complemented by travertine's natural warmth. Aged bronze details appear in their raw form, adding depth and authenticity to the palette.
The spatial journey begins with a dramatic barrel archway that guides visitors into a welcoming reception area. Here, a sculptural staircase serves as a focal point, its sinuous form echoing the curved plastered walls. A carefully positioned stone bookshelf adorns the curved surface, its bullnose edges reflecting the project's meticulous attention to detail.
