Niwa by Koto
Koto's latest release, Niwa, is a family of prefabricated cabins that responds to contemporary needs for flexibility, mobility, and sustainability.
Developed with a focus on versatility and refined simplicity, Niwa introduces a modular system that adapts across landscapes, from rural retreats to urban infill sites, while reflecting Koto's pared-back architectural language.
The series is structured around a set of scaled modules, each one precisely engineered for compact delivery and efficient on-site assembly. Ranging from 2.5m x 2.5m units suitable for saunas or artist studios, to 5m x 7.5m configurations intended for larger living quarters or hospitality use, the Niwa cabins operate as standalone dwellings or can be combined to form more complex arrangements. All options are finished in Koto's signature charred timber cladding, with generous glazing and a strong graphic roofline that reinforces the visual clarity of each form.
Designed to rest lightly on the land, the cabins embrace an architectural language of restraint and balance. The materials, carefully selected for durability and environmental performance, are sustainably sourced and assembled using a flatpack system that reduces transport footprint and on-site construction time. The resulting forms are at once grounded and mobile, allowing users to install the cabins in remote areas or challenging terrain with minimal disruption.
Interior volumes are shaped around light and openness, with layouts that favour visual flow and adaptable living. Optional furniture packages curated by Koto's interior team provide a seamless, ready-to-live solution that extends the language of the architecture into every detail of the interior. Across all sizes, the emphasis remains on creating spaces that feel calm, generous, and attuned to their setting, whether that's a forested mountainside, a coastal bluff, or an inner-city courtyard.
Niwa is both a response to and an enabler of shifting patterns in how people live, work, and connect with their environment. By delivering refined, sustainable architecture globally, Koto opens up new opportunities for modular living that is as thoughtful as it is accessible.
